A  Fiber Optic Cannula consists of a ceramic ferrule and a length of bare optical fiber. Using stereotaxic guidance, the cannula can be implanted into the targeted nerve nucleus, and then it can be fixed on the skull with dental cement and screws. The cannula can be connected to a fiber optic patch cord with a matching ceramic sleeve.

In optogenetics experiments, fiber optic cannulae can deliver the light emitted by the LED or laser to specific nerve nuclei and regulate the activity of neurons. 

In fiber photometry experiments, fiber optic cannulae can deliver the exciting light to specific nerve nuclei and simultaneously record the fluorescence intensity changes caused by the inflow of calcium ions.

Inper offers two sizes of fiber optic cannulas with Ø1.25 mm or Ø2.5 mm ferrules. 

The fiber optic cannula with Ø1.25mm ferrule is small-sized and lightweight, making it ideal for small laboratory animals, or multiple stimulations or fiber recording within a small area of an experimental animal.

The fiber optic cannula with Ø2.5mm ferrule is more conducive to surgical operation, and the connection between dental cement and experimental animals will also be stronger, being suitable for large experimental animals or a single point of stimulation or fiber recording.

NA Options

The numerical aperture (NA) is the ability of the fiber end face to receive light, and it also determines the angle of light emitted from the fiber.

In experiments, the smaller the numerical aperture (NA), the smaller the angle of light emitted from the fiber, and the smaller the illuminated area, that is, the smaller the area of ​​the nerve nucleus controlled by light. The larger the numerical aperture, the larger the angle of light emitted from the fiber, and the larger the illuminated area, that is, the larger the area of ​​the nerve nucleus controlled by light.

In fiber photometry experiments, more fluorescent signals can be collected with a larger numerical aperture.
